Everyone agrees, you can’t ever go wrong with pizza! These sourdough pizza rolls are my husband’s favorite right now! The tangy bread with marinara, mozzarella and pepperoni are a great addition to any meal.

The Perfect Side
As moms, we enjoy meals that are simple to make and nutrient dense because we want to feed our families the best while not spending all of our time in the kitchen.
Feeding our families the best can often be tricky due to picky eaters, busy schedules and just regular housework.
Sometimes we forget that we have to get some food started and other times we just want to make something new to switch things up.
These sourdough pizza rolls are a great side dish to start incorporating into your regular menu. They’re super simple to make and everyone will love them!

The first time I made these, it was love at first bite and Colby eagerly requested that I make these all the time. That was going to be easy because I completely agreed!
Whenever I make them, we love adding them to every meal! Our favorite way right now is alongside scrambled eggs.
These are also great for a Friday or any other time that we are abstaining from meat because the pepperoni can be left out!
Here’s the step-by-step instructions with pictures so that you can start enjoying these sourdough pizza rolls!
Sourdough Pizza Rolls
Ingredients
2 cups of sourdough starter. You want to make sure that you’re using an active starter, which is a starter that has been fed a couple hours before.
5-6 cups of all purpose flour. You should be able to use any kind of flour. My preference is all purpose.
1 cup of filtered water. I use the filtered water from our Berkey for all of our cooking and baking.
2 tbs of olive oil. I use organic extra virgin olive oil.
1 tbs of salt. You want to use a good quality salt if you can. I have Redmond salt and love using it in baked goods.
2 tbs of sugar. I use organic granulated sugar that I buy in bulk from Costco.

Marinara or pizza sauce. Whichever you normally use with pizza or whichever one you currently have on hand. Use whatever amount makes you happy, just be careful to not overfill.
Mozzarella cheese. I use a fresh block of mozzarella cheese and just break it apart as I go, but of course shredded mozzarella cheese works just as well. Put as much cheese as you want, you just have to make sure it can still close.
Pepperoni. This is definitely optional. If you want to make sure that it can be eaten on days of abstinence, then go ahead and leave it out.
That’s all the ingredients you need in order to make sourdough pizza rolls. I definitely recommend using the best quality ingredients that you can get, but these rolls will still be delicious with any store brand ingredients you can find.
Directions
Add the ingredients to a stand mixer with the dough mixer attachment. If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can also easily do this by hand, just put all your ingredients into a mixing bowl.
Mix on low speed until the ingredients are incorporated and then increase to medium speed.
Continue mixing until you have a nice dough. You will probably have to add some more flour during this step. I start out mixing with 5 cups of flour and then slowly add up to another cup during this process.

Once you have a dough, you’re going to knead it for about 10 minutes on medium speed.
After the dough is done kneading, cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rise 2 -3 hours until doubled in size. It doesn’t have to be exact, you just want the dough to have risen.

Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. It does not have to be perfect at all. Mine always ends up uneven and one side is often a little thinner than the other.
Next is the fun part! Top the dough with marinara or pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. Just be careful not to overstuff it or else it won’t close!
Don’t worry if you do overstuff it, I’ve overstuffed it several times, it’s a bit of a mess but still delicious!

The next step is to roll it up like a log and pinch the end closed. This is just like how you would roll up cinnamon roll dough.

Cut the log into about 16 rolls and place them on a parchment lined dish. I like to split the rolls into two 9 by 13 glass pans which gives me 8 rolls in both pans and I just prefer that. You can certainly put them all into one large pan.

Cover the pan or pans with a towel and let the rolls rise for about another hour.
When the rolls are almost done rising, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
Bake for 30-40 minutes until lightly golden brown.

Let cool and then enjoy your delicious homemade sourdough pizza rolls!
Enjoy!
I hope you and your family enjoy these sourdough pizza rolls as much as my family does!
They are so good with soups, salads, scrambled eggs, chicken nuggets, gumbo, jambalaya and anything else you can think of.
Another way these rolls are good are as snacks! Especially snacks for kids! Kids are always looking for something to munch on and these rolls are perfect!
Let me know when you give them a try!
Some variations you could try might be three cheese pizza rolls, or maybe even supreme pizza rolls. Bacon crumbles would also be amazing in these rolls and Italian sausage crumbles would be delicious as well.
So have fun with it! Just remember that you have to roll it up after you put in your filling of choice.
I would love to see any variations that your family likes to do. We would be thrilled to give them a try as well!
