Sourdough Garlic Rolls

May 29, 2024 by homemakingwiththesaints Leave a Comment

Sourdough garlic rolls are the perfect side to any dish! I absolutely love them on the side of some spaghetti, but these would go great with any pasta, soup, or whatever else you want.

These rolls are so simple to make! We’ve been having them just about every week for a while now.

Trying to figure out what side to have with one of the suppers you have planned for this week? These sourdough garlic rolls are made with ingredients that I know you already have.

So feed your sourdough starter and then you’re all set to bake!

Let’s make sourdough garlic rolls!

Ingredients

2 cups active sourdough starter. An active starter has been fed within the last 12 hours. If you need some help or some tips on maintaining your sourdough starter, check out this article for that helping hand.

5-6 cups of flour. I always use organic all purpose flour.

1 cup of water. You want to use filtered water whenever you are working with sourdough. We have a Berkey and I use water from there for all of our baked goods.

1 tablespoon of salt. I use Redmond Salt. It’s our favorite.

2 tablespoons of sugar. I haven’t tried doing it yet, but I’m pretty sure that you could use honey if you don’t want to use granulated sugar.

2 tablespoons of olive oil.

2 sticks of softened butter.

Minced garlic. As much garlic as you like. I just give the garlic a good chop, so cut it however you like.

Italian seasoning. If you use Italian seasoning a lot, try out this homemade bulk recipe.

That’s it. Using the best quality ingredients you can find will definitely make the best rolls, but using whatever ingredients you can will still make delicious rolls.

Directions

Add the starter, flour, water, salt, sugar and olive oil together in a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment. You could also definitely do this by hand if you don’t have a stand mixer.

Mix the ingredients together on low speed until incorporated and then increase the speed to medium to knead the dough.

Knead the dough for about 10 minutes.

Set the dough aside covered with a towel and let rise for 2-3 hours.

Once the dough is finished rising, you’re going to roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Don’t worry about getting your dough into a perfectly even rectangle.

Mix the butter and garlic together and then spread it on the dough. Make sure you leave about an inch on the long end to be able to seal it closed.

Sprinkle the Italian seasoning on top. As much or as little as you want. You could also leave this off if you prefer, I just like the taste it adds to these rolls.

Now you’re going to roll it up into a log. Pinch the end to seal it.

Cut it into 16 rolls. I like to use a bench scraper to cut through.

Place each roll on a lined baking dish. I used a glass 9 by 13 dish and squeezed all 16 rolls in it. You could also split them into 2 baking dishes with 8 rolls in each one.

Cover with a towel again and let rise another hour.

Preheat oven to 350 F when the rolls are almost done rising and then bake for 30 – 40 minutes until golden brown.

Let cool and then enjoy your homemade sourdough garlic rolls!

Give Them a Try!

Pair these with your favorite lunch or have them as a snack. They really are that versatile.

If you still need some ideas on what to pair these rolls with, you can try them with chicken nuggets, salads, nachos or gumbo.
